EU Exit travel and transport advice
Most local transport and travel arrangements will be unchanged when the UK leaves the European Union. But there will be significant changes to the arrangements for travelling abroad and there may be increased congestion on some roads.

Travelling to and from Portsmouth
Working with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum, a traffic management plan has been devised to deal with extra freight vehicles travelling to the port. This should reduce the impact on local roads in the area. To keep your journeys running smoothly when you travel through and around Portsmouth, there are a few things to note.
Portsmouth International Port is an important port for road traffic going to Europe and the Channel Islands. Traffic for the Isle of Wight does not use the Portsmouth International Port. After Brexit, a co-ordinated plan will be activated through Hampshire & Isle of Wight's Local Resilience Forum to control the flow of commercial traffic, and deal with any congestion that might be caused at the port. This includes setting up extra areas where lorries travelling to the port can have documents checked.
Drivers going to and from the Isle of Wight through Portsmouth will notice some changes.
- At certain times, we are expecting the M275 area of the city will be busier than normal so if you need to travel in this area, plan your journey and allow more time.
- Vehicle signs on the motorway will direct lorries going to the EU. All other vehicles including all freight and passenger traffic for the Isle of Wight should follow signs and routes as normal.
- For drivers' safety we will be reducing the speed limit to 40mph on part of the M275, while the special arrangements for lorries are in place.
Travelling to and from Southampton and Lymington
Arrangements at Southampton and Lymington are not expected to be directly affected by Brexit. If you are travelling via these ports you do not need to make any changes to your plans.
