Joining our dynamic Healthy Team, you’ll have the opportunity to advance your career in public health whilst playing a key role in improving health outcomes for Isle of Wight residents. We are a small, supportive, friendly team working across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with a passion for using evidence-based approaches to improve population health and wellbeing through positive behaviour change.

Your proven track record of contributing to Public Health outcomes will enable you to support and develop innovative interventions to implement our emerging Public Health Strategy, including focussing on prevention smoking uptake in young people, helping smokers to stop smoking, helping residents to achieve a healthy weight, and be physically active.  You will commission services and perform quality reviews to ensure an excellent standard of service provision to the public.

Your knowledge of public health concepts and your ability to use evidence-based research methods to gather, interpret and present complex data in a meaningful way will be key.  Your excellent communication skills and experience of multiagency working will help us to build on our strong working relations with our partners.

You will report into a Public Health Principal and line manage a Practitioner who will support delivery of the portfolio area. You may be required to matrix work across the Public Health team enabling you to benefit from the opportunity to work in other Public Health portfolio areas.

Applicants for the Senior Public Health Practitioner role will have a postgraduate level qualification in either Public Health or a related discipline (for example a UK Master’s degree or postgraduate diploma), and extensive experience in a Public Health Practitioner role (or similar).  You’ll have a good understanding and preferably experience of tobacco control, healthy weight, physical activity and/or cardiovascular disease prevention. 

At the Isle of Wight Council, we are committed to creating opportunity and invest in our workforce.  If you have a first degree but do not have the relevant postgraduate qualification in either Public Health or a related discipline, there is an opportunity for a Trainee post where you are asked to be able to commit to submitting a portfolio to become a registered UKPHR Public Health Practitioner and to complete a Public Health Master’s degree.  To appoint to the Trainee Senior Public Health Practitioner post you will need to have significant experience in commissioning, contract management and/or project management and be keen to move into a career in public health.
