Youth Crime Prevention (YCP)
The Youth Crime Prevention (YCP) service is team within the Isle of Wight Youth Offending Team that aims to transform young people’s lives and divert them away from the criminal justice system.
Our approach is to:
- deliver specific targeted work to young people who are at risk of taking part in offending behaviour and/or antisocial behaviour.
- focus intervention work around offending and/or antisocial behaviour.
- offer support with associated issues such as anger management, low self-esteem and substance misuse.
We do this through:
- one to one sessions with young people for a period of between 6 and 12 weeks.
- taking young people to the police station, to see police custody and visits to youth court.
- positive activities in the community.
Referral criteria
Any young person aged 10 to 17 years (inclusive), who is at risk of offending and who:
- in the past three months engaged in anti-social behaviour,
- in the past three months come to the attention of the police due to their behaviour in the community but has not yet received formal sanction,
- has siblings/parents who have been convicted of offending where the referred child is exhibiting similar behaviour.
All referrals will be screened upon receipt against the criteria above.
Where those criteria are deemed not to be met, advice and/or feedback will be provided along with signposting to other services as appropriate.
Referral process
The young person and parent/carer must sign the referral form to state they have agreed to referral being completed.
