« Back

Target Group:

This conference is intended for Designated Safeguarding Leads and professionals responsible for the safeguarding of children and young people

Course Aims:

Keynote speaker – Jeremy Indika: Founder of the 'Something to Say' movement, dedicated to breaking the silence surrounding child sexual abuse.

In addition to hearing Jeremy speak in the morning, participants will have the opportunity to attend two out of three afternoon workshops, which can be selected in advance of the event.

The workshops will be delivered by:

Jeremy Indika - Sharpen Your Safeguarding: Skills That Strengthen You and Your School

This session builds on the keynote by shifting the focus from why abuse is so often hidden to what you can do about it. In my talk, you saw I took you inside the mind of a child or teenager — to understand their vulnerabilities and how abuse might actually feel when you’re the one living it. But in this session, we’ll move towards the practical: what to look out for, how to respond, and how to create a culture where young people are more likely to come forward. It’s a space to reflect, share ideas, and sharpen the way safeguarding works in real life — in you, and in your school.

Youth Justice and Lionheart School - Beyond the home

This workshop offers valuable insights into how contextual safeguarding can be effectively implemented to create safer environments for all children.

Traditional safeguarding has focused on protecting children from harm within the family, such as neglect, abuse, and domestic violence. While this remains essential, there is growing awareness that children’s safety is also shaped by wider influences beyond the home.

Contextual safeguarding recognises the impact of external environments—like schools, peer groups, online spaces, neighbourhoods, and communities—which can either support or endanger a child’s wellbeing.

This approach calls for multi-agency collaboration and community-based action, working with schools, youth services, police, and local organisations to identify and address risks where children spend their time.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary - Strengthening Safeguarding Partnerships on the Isle of Wight

This workshop aims to enhance collaboration between police and education professionals on the Isle of Wight in the shared effort to safeguard children. It will outline the role of the Child Abuse Investigation Team, highlight local safeguarding priorities, and emphasise the importance of timely and well-documented referrals from schools.

The session will also explore key indicators of abuse, common barriers to effective safeguarding, and the significance of sharing even seemingly minor concerns. Participants will be encouraged to engage in ongoing dialogue, access training opportunities, and strengthen multi-agency working to improve outcomes for children.

Intended Impact:

Furthermore, there will be opportunities for networking with other safeguarding professionals.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session featuring all workshop leaders.

Note - This conference fulfils DSL's CPD requirement for the year.
