Target Group:
This training is designed for anyone working with children and young people, including:
Course Aims:
This one-day, City & Guilds Assured training teaches practical skills and knowledge to help you support a young person who may be thinking about suicide. It’s suitable for use in both professional and personal settings.
You’ll learn how to recognise the signs, build confidence to step in, and carry out a safe and supportive intervention.
Intended Impact:
As a result of attending this course, participants will:
-A clear understanding of how to respond safely and appropriately when a young person may be at risk
-Training grounded in safeguarding principles, children’s rights (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child), and a trauma-informed approach
-A structured programme made up of four 90-minute sessions
-The chance to practise your skills so you feel confident and capable in real-life situations
Prerequisites:
No previous experience or training is necessary.

The H&S Team and IWC Learning and Development, have completed competency assessments on all providers advertised in the Learning Hub. Therefore, any physical or mental health first aid providers/courses advertised via the Learning Hub do not require schools/other organisations to carry out competency assessments (as per the 2024 HSE First Aid guidance changes). This applies to both current and future providers/courses

Kate Golding
Trainer Biography:
Kate is a Consultant Nurse with a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. She has taught health and social care and psychology up to degree level and works as a training consultant in mental health, covering infant, child, adolescent, and adult mental health. Kate led the targeted mental health in schools project on the Isle of Wight and developed an end-of-life transition service for under-25s at Mountbatten Hospice.
She is a trainer for various mental health areas, including nurture training and suicide first aid, and has worked with organizations such as the NHS, The Prince’s Trust, Oxford Brookes and Portsmouth University, MIND, and the Houses of Parliament. Kate's engaging delivery and expert knowledge consistently receive excellent feedback, with attendees often commenting on how much they learn and enjoy her sessions.
In 2019, Kate co-authored the MHFA England youth half-day aware course. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she trained professionals and volunteers supporting rough sleepers and the homeless for NHS England, Homeless Link, and MHFA England. In 2021, she was a keynote speaker at the MIND Jersey annual conference, discussing reconnecting with hope during the pandemic. Kate also trained the NHS England and NHS Improvement team responsible for the COVID-19 inquiry, which she found to be an honor and a privilege.
In 2022, Kate provided training for MPs at Parliament and was published in the Nursing Times and Neuro Rehab Times. She was also interviewed for a podcast about her life as a nurse in the "Ordinary Pioneers" series. Kate is one of the most respected clinicians and teachers in the south of England, staying current with legislation and research through her roles in clinical practice, leadership, and teaching
