Advanced Assessing Capacity and Best Interests

Target Group:

This course is specifically aimed at staff who are already familiar with the Mental Capacity Act and need to assess capacity as part of their role such as staff within DoLS, CMHT, Safeguarding and AMHP teams, however other practitioners from other service areas may also benefit from the content.



Course Aims:

This course has been commissioned to support regulated staff to meet their CPD requirements. The topic aims to equip delegates with knowledge around this specialist area so they can transfer their learning into practice.




Intended Impact:

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Enhance their skills in assessing capacity and best interests decision making
  • Understand key lessons from case law for assessing capacity
  • Consider relevant issues and case law in relation to best interests
  • Identify situations that require Court of Protection authority
  • Apply learning into practice through case study scenarios

Course Trainer:
Helen Kelsall

Trainer Biography:

Helen is a qualified social worker, with many years of experience working in mental health services, most recently as a Senior Practitioner in an assessment and treatment team carrying out Approved Mental Health Professional and Best Interests Assessor Work. She also has a counselling qualification and has a particular interest in the therapeutic side to social work practice. She now works as an Independent Social Worker.

More recently, Helen has been working in the homelessness mental health field - undertaking assessments with homeless people experiencing mental health problems and developing guidance and training in this field. Helen has also previously provided clinical advice and support to a registered care home for people with mental health difficulties.
