Suicide First Aid Lite

Target Group:

Multi-sector managers and practitioners including health, housing, social care, education, criminal justice, call centre operators, private, voluntary and public sector workers and community groups or members.



Course Aims:

Suicide First Aid Lite comprises 2 parts, each 90 minutes duration. The programme teaches the skills needed to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and to pass the person onto a suicide first aider.

Suicide First Aid Lite training offers learning outcomes that are knowledge based and factual. This training can be used as a stand-alone programme or as the first part of a journey to learn suicide prevention skills.. The information in Suicide First Aid Lite is easy to grasp for people of all skill levels and those with no prior knowledge of the subject. It is designed to meet the needs of virtual groups and could be used as a forerunner to the one-day Suicide First Aid programme.

Part 1 – 90 minutes

• Introduction to the session; programme, ourselves and suicide prevention

• Stigma and survivors of bereavement by suicide and the Hidden Toll

• Suicide thoughts and suicide behaviour

• Intention of behaviour versus outcome of behaviour

• Possible causes of suicide thoughts

• Suicide – The ripple effect


Part 2 – 90 minutes

• ‘I’m really glad you told me’ audio visual

• Suicide Safety Guidance

• Recognising and asking about suicide

• Referring a person onto suicide first aiders



Intended Impact:

Increased confidence and reduced anxiety in dealing with people at risk of suicide.



Notes:

No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation on participants to share personal experiences.?

Kate Golding

Trainer Biography:

Kate qualified as a general nurse in 1998 and worked in Accident and Emergency and various prisons for five years where she gained a degree in psychology. Following the birth of her daughter, she began teaching at the Isle of Wight College as a lecturer in Health and Social Care and psychology covering GCSE, A ‘Levels and degree level courses. Kate returned to nursing after three years and was employed by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service where she was seconded to Ryde Children’s Centre for five years and worked with the age range 0-5 alongside a health visitor and a midwife. Kate was asked to become involved in the Targeted Mental Health in schools project in 2010-2011 and this involved a target group of children who were assessed before, during and after psychological interventions were delivered. The idea was to support schools in supporting children with emotional and psychological distress so this could be sustained long after the project had finished. Kate was then seconded to the Youth Offending Team where she worked with 10-18 year olds. Kate was asked by the Autistic Diagnostic Research Centre (ADRC) to work as a nurse consultant within the field of autism. Part of this role includes being trained in neuro-psychology.

Kate has recently become an Ambassador for the Royal College of Nursing and she is National Trainer for MHFA England. Kate is due to take up post at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice where she is setting up a service for children and young adults with life limiting conditions. Kate is also just finishing her MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at the University of Southampton.

Kate regularly delivers training and has a particular interest in attachment theory and working with traumatized children. Kate delivers training all over the country and last year she delivered this course at The House of Commons which was very exciting! Kate has a dream of one day opening a therapeutic children’s home.
