Safer Moving and Handling of People

Target Group:
For any social care practitioner that is responsible for moving people safely. This course is for any new staff or those that have no previous experience of moving and handling.
Course Aims:
Over the course of the training delegates will:
- Gain an understanding of where to access policies and procedures and the importance of following them
- Gain an understanding of basic spinal anatomy, posture awareness, 24 hour Back Care and Exercises
- Gain an understanding of risk assessments, what to include in a risk assessment and understand the importance of filling out these forms correctly
- Understand the basic principles of safer load handling and the Manual Handling Operations (1992)
- Gain an understanding of normal movement and be able to put these principles into practice to contribute to safer patient handling
- Introduce learners to the manual handling equipment available
- Gain knowledge on how to use the equipment safely
- Create an opportunity for learners to raise concerns or ask questions in regard to manual handling
- Gain an understanding of how to manage a fallen person
- Demonstrate good knowledge of the principles of safer handling techniques and good posture.
Notes:
- This course is being provided for all IWC staff in residential and outreach services and is also open to external applicants. As such the delegates may be from a mix of workplaces.
- As with all training it is essential that you do not attend if you have Covid-like symptoms yourself or if you are working with clients who are symptomic or have tested positive for Covid. Please find the 'Health Declaration' attached which you will be required to sign on the day.
- Wearing face masks is optional, however the provider requests delegates wear them when doing the practical part of the session as it is impossible to socially distance. Face masks will also need to be worn in communal corridors and stairways.
- Access to the training will be by the fire exit in the room so as to reduce the amount of people walking through the open office to the training room, someone will be there to direct attendees – please find the ‘Site Map’ attached to the confirmation.
- Attendees will need to bring refreshments and food as there is no access to the kitchen area at present except for the office-based staff.
- Delegates are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing as there will be practical exercises to undertake during the course
