Mental Health First Aid (Adult)

Target Group:

Anyone who wishes to become a Mental Health First Aider for their workplace.



Course Aims:

• Depression, anxiety, suicide, psychosis, substance misuse, eating disorders, personality disorder and self-harm are all covered on this course
• To preserve life where a person may be at risk of harm to themselves or others
• To provide help to prevent the mental health issue from becoming more serious before professional help arrives
• To promote the recovery of good emotional and mental health
• To provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health issue
• To raise awareness of mental health issues in the community
• To reduce stigma and discrimination
• To improve own mental health and wellbeing



Intended Impact:

• Recognise the symptoms of mental ill health
• Feel confident helping a person experiencing a problem
• Provide initial help
• Guide a person towards appropriate professional help
• Be mindful of your own wellbeing

This certificate is valid for 3 years from the date the certificate is issued at which time learners would be required to attend the relevant refresher training.

Course Trainer:
Kate Golding

Trainer Biography:

Kate qualified as a general nurse in 1998 and spent the next six years working in Accident and Emergency and prison nursing. In 2000, Kate completed a BSc Psychology and has gone on to study for a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at The University of Southampton. Kate has taught health and social care and psychology and continues to work privately as a training consultant in the area of infant, child, adolescent and adult mental health. Kate was seconded from CAMHS for eight years to various settings including early years, schools and forensics. In addition to this, Kate was one of the leads for the targeted mental health in schools project on the Isle of Wight.

Kate worked as a Consultant Nurse for the Autism Diagnostic Research Centre where she was commissioned to undertake autism diagnoses. Following this, Kate set up and led a service for children with life shortening conditions at Mountbatten hospice. Working alongside the team of educational and clinical psychologists at Bridges for Learning as a Consultant Nurse, Kate continues to work in the core MDT providing autism assessment.

Kate has provided clinical supervision for psychologists, nurses and social workers and currently, Kate provides clinical supervision for a large setting with patients who have profound and complex needs.

Kate is a trainer for nurture training and youth and adult mental health first aid among other bespoke packages around mental health and emotional wellbeing. Kate has trained regularly for local authorities, NHS, The Prince’s Trust, Oxford Brookes University, MIND, schools, foster care teams, foster carers, children’s homes, early years, housing associations, police, social care, charity staff, SEN, CITB and many more including at the Houses of Parliament. Feedback is always excellent and the attendees often comment about Kate’s engaging delivery style, expert knowledge and say as well as having learnt masses of information, they have had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Kate always gets asked to return and deliver more training.

In 2019 Kate was one of the authors for the MHFA England Youth half day aware course, manual and workbook.

2020 brought Covid 19 and Kate was asked to do a piece of work for NHS England, Homeless Link and MHFA England delivering lots of training to a range of professionals and volunteers supporting rough sleepers and the homeless.

Kate has a special interest in children and adults who have experienced emotional trauma and continues to work with child patients and their families in private practice.
