Introduction

All violent and unnatural deaths, deaths where the cause is unknown, and all deaths in custody or otherwise in State detention must be reported to the Coroner. If the law requires it or an initial post mortem examination suggests the death was unnatural, an inquest will be conducted. Inquests require the Coroner to ascertain the identity of the deceased as well as the medical cause of death and how, where and when  the deceased came by their death.

Please Note: The Council has a legal duty to fund the Coronial service on the Island but HM Senior Coroner is an independent judicial Officer and is not employed by the Council.
